First Results from the 2006-7 Flight of the Balloon Borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope - BLAST

Mark Devlin

University of Pennsylvania

The BLAST telescope is designed to probe the submillimeter universe.  It searches for star formation in our galaxy and distant galaxies.  I will discuss the first results from our December 2006-January 2007 flight in Antarctica. We obtained the first high-resolution, large area surveys of both the Milky-Way and high-redshift galaxies.  The Galactic maps show thousands of pre-stellar cores.  The extragalactic maps show thousands of high-redshift galaxies with high rates of star formation.  From these data we learn about the evolution of our Galaxy and our Universe.
