Particle-antiparticle Oscillation and CP Violation in the World of Charm

Professor Brian Meadows

University of Cincinnati

The phenomenon of quantum mixing has been known, for a long time, to lead to the possibility of transitions in flavour and, in self-conjugate systems, to particle-antiparticle oscillations and enhanced CP violation effects. These oscillations have been observed for over fourty years in various systems, but only within the past two years in the systems with charm flavour. The latter observations will be examined. The possible reasons why it took so long for them to surface and also why they might be interesting, will be addressed.
