Graduate PhD Program in Physics and Astronomy

Our program is home to 82 full-time students representing 16 nations. They work in many fields, including astrophysics, condensed-matter physics, materials physics, nonlinear systems, nuclear physics, and high-energy particle physics. In addition to the facilities at Northwestern, our students also have access to over 20 major research facilities around the world, including CERN (Switzerland), Fermilab (Illinois), and the Admundsen-Scott South Pole Station (Antarctica). We have 31 faculty engaged in directing PhD research, and a total of 40 faculty at all ranks. (Follow the "Faculty Profiles" link above for more information.) We also have 32 Postdoctoral Research Associates conducting research in our department. Our faculty are well-funded, and the total research budget for the department is about $7 million/year.

One indication of the quality of our graduate program was highlighted in the Diamond-Graham report, published in August, 2000. In that report, Northwestern's Physics & Astronomy program was ranked eighth in the nation. The Diamond-Graham report is notable because it compares academic programs by how often their published work is cited by other researchers, rather than by the more-common method of using opinion polls.
