Michael Schmitt and his research group study processes initiated by the collisions of very high energy protons and anti-protons.  As members of the CDF Collaboration at Fermilab, they have access to data which directly probe the smallest distance scales of any experiment in the world.  Their research emphasizes the electroweak sector of the Standard Model, as well as searches for new particles and new phenomena.  They have measured the production of W and Z bosons which mediate the weak interactions — this is the gateway to the exciting studies of the top quark and, possibly, the discovery of the Higgs boson.  They have also searched for new particles in the high mass spectrum of muon pairs.

Schmitt's research group also carries responsibilities for the CDF detector.  First, they take care of an important sub-detector system which provides data on muons — the so-called "CMX" system — as well as help run the overall muon detector system.  Secondly, they perform various calibration tasks associated with the muon system, such as day-by-day monitoring, alignment, and calibration.  Finally, they are in charge of the computer codes for the reconstruction and identification of muons in proton—anti-proton collisions.

Schmitt has also joined the CMS Collaboration.  The CMS Experiment at CERN (in Geneva, Switzerland) will collect data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) starting in 2007.  The LHC will have seven times the energy of the Fermilab Tevatron.  Schmitt is currently co-convenor of the LPC Muon Group.  Northwestern colleagues Velasco and Schellman are also active on CMS, and Gobbi has been a leading member for several years.
