Andrew RiversLecturer PhD, University of New Mexico, 2000 2006 Faculty Honor Roll Andrew Rivers is both a Lecturer in Physics & Astronomy and an academic advisor in the Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences. His PhD research included a large-scale radio-astronomy survey of the so-called "Zone of Avoidance": a large region of the sky containing few visible external galaxies due to obscuration by dust near the disk of our own Milky Way Galaxy. Looking for hidden galaxies using long-wavelength radio waves which pass through the dust unobscured, Rivers discovered approximately 20 previously unknown nearby galaxies. Rivers joined the Northwestern faculty in 1999 and has taught a variety of courses in physics and astronomy including the introductory physics sequences, Modern Cosmology, and the Ideas of Physics. Rivers also serves as a faculty associate to the Gateway Science Workshop program and is a faculty fellow of the Slivka and Chapin residential colleges. His leisure activities include tinkering with Linux, attending obscure art films, and reading nonfiction from diverse fields. |
